A teacher holding a two-way radio, talking to a pupil, in a playground

Running a school means keeping a lot of moving parts connected. Staff on break duty. A caretaker across the site. Someone on the front gate. A trip leaving for the afternoon. When something needs sorting now, a phone call, an email or a walk across the playground is rarely the quickest way.

That is the gap two-way radios (often called walkie talkies) fill. One press of a button and the right person hears you straight away.

But radios are not right for every school, and they are not free of drawbacks. This page covers the benefits, the downsides, the questions to ask and how pricing works, so you can decide with confidence.

Does any of this sound like your school?

  • Staff on duty cannot reach someone quickly when a situation develops
  • The caretaker or site team is hard to find on a large or spread-out site
  • Passing messages through the office takes time you do not have
  • Off-site trips and sports days leave you out of easy contact
  • Senior leaders want a quicker, calmer way to coordinate during an incident
  • You have been asked to "look into radios" and do not know where to start

If you nodded at any of these, radios are worth a proper look.

Tell us about your site and we will tell you honestly if radios would help

Where two-way radios help in a school

Every school is different, so here is where radios typically earn their place. We will tell you which apply to you.

Senior leadership teams (SLT)

Radios give leaders a quick, direct line to the people who need to act, without waiting on a call to be answered or a message to be read. For fast, efficient, one-to-many communication it's simple.

Facilities and site teams

Caretakers and site staff can be reached wherever they are on site, and can report problems straight away: a leak, a locked gate, a delivery at the wrong entrance.

Playground duty

Staff on duty can call for support or pass a message instantly, without leaving their location to find someone.

Classrooms and front office

The office can reach the right person quickly without a cross-site search, and staff can ask for help without leaving a class unattended for longer than needed.

Trips and sports days

Keep trip leaders, drivers, coaches and the school connected on days when everyone is spread out.

Site security and lockdown situations

Radios give staff a fast, direct way to coordinate during a security concern. The right setup depends on your site and your own procedures, which is exactly what the free consultation covers.

"Can't we just use mobile phones?" Two-way radios vs mobile phones in schools

It is the most common question we hear, and it is a fair one. Here is a straight comparison.

Two-way radiosMobile phones
Speed to reach someoneOne press of a buttonOpen up your contacts, Find the right person, Dial, wait, hope they answer
Reaching a larger group at onceYes, designed for itNeeds a group call or message via another app
Reliance on mobile signalNot for on-site radio useYes

Upfront costYesUsually higher, unless staff use their own

The honest bit: if your site is small, staff are always close together and the office phone reaches everyone, radios may be more than you need. We will say so. If your site is large, spread out or busy, radios often make a real difference.

What radios can't do (and what to watch for)

Most suppliers skip this. We think you should hear it first.

  • They need looking after. Radios must be charged and kept track of. A simple routine (charging point, sign-out sheet, named owner) solves this.
  • Staff need a short briefing. Radios are simple, but a few minutes on how to use them properly avoids confusion on the day.
  • Coverage depends on your buildings. Thick walls, multiple floors and large grounds can affect performance. This is why we ask about your site before recommending anything.
  • Some radio types need a licence. Others do not. We will explain which applies to you, in plain English, and not choose for you.
  • They are another thing to budget for. Which brings us to cost.

How much do two-way radios for schools cost?

We believe you should know what to expect before you speak to anyone.

The honest answer is "it depends", so here is what it depends on:

  • How many radios you need. A small team on break duty is very different from a whole-site rollout.
  • The type of radio. Simple, easy-to-use handhelds cost less than radios with advanced features.
  • The brand. Like most things, lesser known brands are more affordable than premium, established brands.
  • Whether you need extra coverage. A single building is usually much simpler than a large or multi-site setup.
  • Accessories. Earpieces, chargers, holsters and spare batteries.

Your questions, answered honestly

Do we need a licence to use two-way radios?

It depends on the type of radio. Some need one and some do not. We will explain what applies to your setup before you spend anything.

How many radios does a school usually need?

It varies widely with site size and who needs to be reachable. We will work out the right number with you in the consultation.

Will they work across our whole site?

That depends on your buildings and grounds. We ask about the layout first and tell you honestly what to expect, before you commit.

Are radios hard for staff to use?

No. A short briefing is usually all that is needed.

Are walkie talkies suitable for schools?

Walkie talkies are another name for two-way radios, and many schools find them useful for staff on duty, site teams and trips. Whether they suit your school depends on your site and how you work, which is what the free consultation is for.

What if we only need them for occasional events?

Tell us about your plans and we will talk through the options.

Is it a big upfront cost?

See the pricing section above. The free consultation and 7-day trial exist so you can judge value before committing.

Can we pay on account?

30-day payment terms are available for schools, subject to the usual credit checks.
